A walk down memory lane

The First International Conference on Advancements in Automation, Robotics and Sensing (ICAARS 2016) was hosted in Coimbatore, India by the Department of Robotics and Automation Engineering, PSG College of Technology during 23 - 24 June 2016. It provided ample opportunity for researchers, industrial experts, academicians and practicing engineers from all over the world to form professional networks and learn through active participation.

The call for papers resulted in a total of 159 submissions from around the world. Every submission was assigned to at least three members of the technical committee for review. The program committee decided to accept 83 papers for oral presentation, which were arranged into 17 sessions resulting in a strong program. Few papers of 2016 conference were published in the prestigious Elsevier Journal. Selected papers were included in post proceedings by Springer.

As Robotics and Automation is the key technology of the future, with applications in a wide spectrum of sectors - from strategic areas like aerospace, defence and atomic energy to services like hospitality and healthcare. It holds the potential to transform the future of manufacturing, opening up new portholes to a world with an improved quality of life.

The Institution

PSG College of Technology was instituted in the year 1951 by PSG & Sons’ Charities Trust. It is an autonomous institution affiliated to Anna University. The college is approved by AICTE and is ISO 9001 certified. It offers a number of educational programmes in Engineering, Information Technology, Management, Science and Technology disciplines at bachelors, masters and doctoral levels on both full time and part-time basis. Most of these programmes have been accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA).

The Institution has always worked closely with the Industry, with industrial training being an inherent part of the curriculum, giving students opportunities to learn from experience. Various programmes for studying abroad, exchange and internship offered here create a valuable learning experience. What makes PSG Tech stand out from its contemporaries is its strong alumni network. The success stories behind the coveted positions that Techians occupy in the organizations across the globe today are very inspiring. It's not just the sound academics or the sophisticated infrastructure but the wholesome and enriching experience of becoming an engineer that makes life at PSG Tech special.

Research and Development in the college receives special thrust, especially with the establishment of 'Centres of Excellence' with prominent industry leaders. It actively collaborates with Industry, research Institutions and Universities world over in various disciplines by way of joint academic programmes, research projects and training. The Institution has evolved into a notable centre for advanced studies and research in several areas of Engineering and Technology in the country.

Department of Robotics and Automation Engineering

The Department of Robotics and Automation Engineering was established in the academic year 2011 in order to meet the growing demand for trained manpower in the field of Robotics and Industrial automation. Automation engineering is an inter-disciplinary field that requires knowledge in hardware as well as software development and their applications. This unique program is tailored to develop superior quality robotics & automation talent for manufacturing, defense, food, aerospace, medical and service sectors.
The Department draws teaching talent from industry and professional practice, apart from competent and committed academicians to enhance the quality of the program. The Faculty is actively involved in research & development projects and consultancy services. A full-fledged centre for robotics is operational, which houses various kinds of robots. The Department organizes conferences and workshops to enable the students and faculty to update knowledge in the latest trends in Robotics and Automation.

The City

If there is one city in Tamil Nadu that can strike a perfect balance between the cosmopolitan lifestyle and rich cultural heritage with serenity, it has to be Coimbatore, the Manchester of South India. Coimbatore is a home to a large number of textile mills, textile machinery manufacturing industries and hosiery units and it is a major hub for trade, especially in cotton goods and hence known as the ‘Cotton City’. It is also India’s leading supplier of pumps and machinery parts and thus has a varied range of industries concentrated in and around. With its historic geographical significance and economic relevance, it makes the visitors of the city more fascinating and delighted.
Coimbatore is a proud host of students from all corners of the country. Because of the quality of the education offered, it is considered to be the educational hub of Tamil Nadu. With all these merits, Coimbatore is considered to be the perfect launchpad by the aspiring industrialists and entrepreneurs of Tamil Nadu.
The scenic hill stations of Ooty, Munnar, Yercaud and Kodaikanal, the historic temples of Perur, and Palani, the historic city of Madurai and Tanjore, the enchanting backwaters and ayurvedic health resorts of Kerala are only a few to be named and are a few hours drive from Coimbatore. It is well connected by air and surface transport. This friendly city, has a salubrious climate and is surrounded by major tourist spots, and has always been a natural favourite with international tourists.
